Lunar Eclipse Photography, Dec 10, 2011

Red Eclipsed Moon, Dec 20 - 21 2010, originally uploaded by Jeffrey Sullivan.

For tonight's moon rise and lunar eclipse events, there are a range of shots available:

Moon Rise: Friday evening before sunset (about 4:15, but time varies with location)
Sunset: Continued moonrise in best post-sunset color (about 5pm, but time varies with location).

Penumbral Eclipse Begins: 3:33am PST, moon at 41.4 degrees altitude
- Night landscapes or cityscapes with full moon in penumbral slightly dimmed state
Partial Eclipse Begins: 4:45am PST, moon at 27.0 degrees altitude (partial eclipse)
- Telephoto shots of moon in various eclipse phases
Total Eclipse Begins: 6:06am PST, moon at 12.3 degrees altitude (nice crescent moon w/red shots in the moments before this)
- Images of red moon and sky over landscapes/cityscapes
Total Eclipse Ends: 6:57am PST, moon at 2.9 degrees altitude
- Partially eclipsed crescent moon setting in best pre-sunrise light
Sunrise: 7:12am PST, moon at 0.4 degrees altitude (partial eclipse)
- Sunrise to moonset, "golden hour" daylight
Moonset: 7:17am PST, moon at -0.3 degrees altitude (partial eclipse)
- If you're in a very high place with very low horizons, for a few short minutes you may be able to capture a panorama, with the rare event of having both the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time!

The additional numbers are the degrees the moon will be above the horizon. Here's a chart enabling you to anticipate which of your lenses can cover something that high, for the shots where you'd like to include both the ground and the eclipsing moon:

Common lens angles of view

If you shoot the entire eclipse in a sequence of still shots with your camera in one place, you can assemble them into a timelapse video like this one:

The other post-processing option for a sequence would be to create a composite photo of the phases, stacked into one image using software such as the free StarStaX:

Lunar Eclipse August 2007

Here are my planning notes from last year, when it took me 46 hours to reach Tucson and a clear patch of sky to shoot the eclipse under:

virginia tech shooting

Police have identified as the alleged shooter which Truett from Myrtle Ross Ashley shot a police officer Virginia Tech before itself killing about 30 minutes later.

There was no link between agent Deriek Crouse, which attracted a campus ambush Thursday, and Ashley, 22, of the police of Partlow, Virginia known, said today.

Ashley, a student of the part-time business at Radford University, near Virginia Tech, has stolen a white Mercedes 2011 seen a real estate office in the city of Radford Wednesday, according to the police of the city of Radford. The Mercedes was stolen after the gun about 11: 25

The SUV was the next day, Thursday, at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Agent Crouse later stopped a car and sat in his unmarked patrol car when Ashley, who had no connection with the motorist stopped, he ran and lethal Crouse shot, police allege. Ashley escaped on foot and changed his wool CAP and high jumper, police said.

At least a part of the fatal meeting which campus annoyed - Thursday was captured on the dash-cam Crouse, and that Virginia Tech agents also are "miked", so there was probably audio of the meeting.

"We know who is that person," said Corinne Geller of the Virginia State Police at a press conference this morning.

The authorities have yet to identify a motive for the ambush.

"At this moment we have no link that the shooter and the agent knew each other at the Crouse were shot," said Geller.

She also said, "we are very certain that it was the only person involved in this."

How to determine a motive for the ambush, Geller said, is "the fundamental part of the research right now."

Virginia Tech Partnering Program - Awards Announced

This year marks the second anniversary of the Virginia Tech-University of Kent Partnering Award Program. The Program is aimed at encouraging and facilitating collaboration between the two institutions, and this year three awards were made.

Ms Bilge Daldeniz (Kent Business School, University of Kent)
Dr Nancy Gard McGehee (Dept of Hospitality & Tourism Management, Virginia Tech)

Ms Daldeniz and Dr McGehee will examine the impacts of volunteer tourism on host communities. Volunteer tourism is a niche that has grown significantly in recent years, but little is known about its effects on host communities. Dr McGehee has worked on volunteer tourism for over a decade, whilst Ms Daldeniz is an emerging scholar in the area; the former’s research experience and theoretical background will complement the latter’s extensive contacts in the field. Together they will submit an application to the UK’s Economic & Social Research Council, to develop a robust, evidence-based framework for future planning, management and hosting of volunteer tourism.

Dr Todd Mei (School of European Culture & Languages, University of Kent)
Prof Nicolaus Tideman (Dept of Economics, Virginia Tech)

Dr Mei and Prof Tideman will discuss economic and philosophical concepts of land, and how related questions of rights and justice can be developed in new ways. The investigators do not share identical views on these areas, but a fertile mixture of agreement and difference exists that will lead to a healthy and critical dialogue and develop each scholar’s thought and contribution to their respective fields. Their collaboration will lead to two proposals to the UK’s Leverhulme Trust: one for a project grant, the other for a Visiting Professorship.

Dr Joao Macieira (Dept of Economics, Virginia Tech)
Dr Diogo de Souza Monteiro (Kent Business School, University of Kent)

Certification – such as that for organic farming standards – tends to be implemented and monitored by third parties (e.g., The Soil Association), and there is now a fast growing global market for the provision of these services. However, there has been little empirical research examining the performance of this market. Drs Macieria and Monteiro will undertake a pilot project to do just that, focusing initially on the organic food sector in the USA, UK and Portugal. This will lead to a joint paper, and the development of a grant proposal targeted at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture in the US, or the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK.

Congratulations to all those involved in these partnerships. They offer an exciting opportunity to make connections and explore shared research which will, we hope, lead to both a productive collaboration and fruitful long term ties between our two universities.

10 Most Fascinating Natural Phenomena In The World

A natural phenomenon is a non-artificial event in the physical sense, and therefore not produced by humans, although it may affect humans. Common examples of natural phenomena include volcanic eruptions, weather, and decay. Most natural phenomena, such as rain, are relatively harmless so far as humans are concerned.

There are various types of natural phenomena, which include Meteorological phenomena, weather, including hurricanes, thunderstorms and tornadoes, and geological phenomena, including volcanic activity and earthquakes. So here I have compiled some of the most fascinating natural phenomena. Also check out some Alien looking landscapes on earth HERE.

Aurora Borealis

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful events to occur in our world, the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has both astounded and amazed people since it was first discovered.

Mammatus Clouds

They are a cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud. Composed primarily of ice, Mammatus Clouds can extend for hundreds of miles in each direction. Mammatus clouds are often harbingers of a coming storm or other extreme weather system.

Red Tides

More correctly known as an algal bloom, the so-called Red tide is a natural event in which estuarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column and can convert entire areas of an ocean or beach into a blood red color.

Penitentes

These amazing ice spikes, generally known as penitentes can be found on mountain glaciers and vary in size dramatically. Initially, the sun’s rays cause random dimples on the surface of the snow.

Sailing Stones

Rocks weighing up to hundreds of pounds have been known to move up to hundreds of yards at a time. Some scientists have proposed that a combination of strong winds and surface ice account for these movements.

SuperCells

Super cell are usually isolated storms, which can last for hours, and sometimes can split in two, with one storm going to the left of the wind and one to the right. They can spout huge amounts of hail, rain and wind and are often responsible for tornados.

Fire Whirls

A fire whir is a rare phenomenon in which a fire, under certain conditions acquires vertical vortices and forms a whirl of a vertical orientation rotating column of air. They can be as high as 30 to 200 ft tall.

Ice Circles

Ice Circles are formed when surface ice gathers in the center of a body of water rather than the edges. A slow moving river current can create a slow turning eddy, which rotates, forming an ice disc. These ice circles have been seen with diameters of over 500 feet.

Gravity Waves

The undulating pattern of a Gravity Wave is caused by air displaced in the vertical plain, usually as a result of updrafts coming off the mountains or during thunderstorms. Nature then tries to restore the fluid changes caused by updrafts within the atmosphere, which present in a visible oscillating pattern within the cloud.

Fire Rainbow

Fire rainbow appears when the sun is high in the sky and its light passes through diaphanous, high-altitude cirrus clouds made up of hexagonal plate crystals.

Birthday Speech

Welcome friends, to Elizabeth’s semi-centennial party! As you know, Elizabeth likes to celebrate everything so today we’re just a little more dressed up than usual.

Monday morning when she and I celebrated well, Monday morning, we were just wearing sweats and running shoes. That was almost as fun as this but all of you weren’t there so that makes this event better!

As you can see here, in 50 years Elizabeth has made a lot of friends. I suspect that like me, she befriended most of you by offering to help you in some way.

In my case, Elizabeth helped me tie my shoe on the first day of school back in kindergarten. I hadn’t quite mastered that skill yet but Elizabeth was way ahead of me. I guess I’ve felt that way ever since then but not in a bad way, in an inspiring way.

I love that my dear friend always challenges me to move forward and achieve more and to always be true to myself.

I’d like to talk a little about Elizabeth’s passion. I’m sure that all of you know of her involvement in the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society since the loss of her sister Ali to lymphoma 10 years ago.

Maybe that is not the most uplifting thing to mention at a 50th birthday party but it is an integral element of Elizabeth’s life. I bring it up to remind us all to remember Ali today, and I am sure she is here in spirit, and also to remind all of you that in lieu of gifts, Elizabeth has asked us to contribute to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Please contribute generously.

Elizabeth, 50 years is a good long time to live—I should know! And it is truly something to celebrate.

In the presence of your family here, your husband Rick, your daughters, Alice and Susan and your parents, Joan and Bob I’d like to say that we here appreciate you and all you have done for so many of us. We celebrate the 50 years you have lived and we wish you many more.

I, for one, am looking forward to speaking again at your centennial party! To Elizabeth, congratulations and many more!

The Bennetton ‘UNHATE’ Campaign Unites World Leaders

The images from the United Colors of Bennetton ‘UNHATE’ campaign will surely put political figures who have resisted cameras back in the spotlight. The pictures are part of an initiative to help raise awareness about political, social and religious indifference, as well as to drum up a little controversy.
The Bennetton UNHATE campaign truly is an eye-catcher. At first glance, you quickly become shocked at what you’re looking at. Is President Obama really kissing the Chinese leader Hu Jintao? Did he just put the moves on Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez? Oh snap, Pope Benedict XVI is getting it on with Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayeb, a prominent Imam for a mosque in Cairo. The images of reconciliation, as provocative as they may be, do give a sense of hope to easing the indifference and tension pertaining to faith, politics and ideas.

The ads are shocking to say the least, but they are also rather effective at grabbing your attention.

We'll use GOP debates against them OBAMA

President Obama told a group of Hispanic journalists today that his re-election campaign could win over Latino voters just by showing them clips from Republican debates.

"I don't think it requires us to go negative in the sense of us running a bunch of ads that are false, or character assassinations," Obama said, as reported by Univision."It will be based on facts."

President Obama says he is confident in his ability to win over Latino voters before next year's elections, thanks to some added help from his Republican opponents.

During a roundtable with Hispanic media in the White House's Roosevelt Room, Obama outlined his strategy for winning over a Latino electorate that remains supportive of him, but less enthusiastically so than in 2008. The president said he'll contrast his record with those of the Republican candidates on hot-button issues ranging from immigration, to the economy and healthcare.

Many political observers believe that drawing a sharp contrast with Republicans will require Obama to go negative, but the president said he won't have to use too harsh a tone to accomplish that.

"I don't think it requires us to go negative in the sense of us running a bunch of ads that are false, or character assassinations," Obama said. "It will be based on facts … We may just run clips of the Republican debates verbatim. We won't even comment on them, we'll just run those in a loop on Univision and Telemundo, and people can make up their own minds."

That's one of the strongest rebukes thus far from Obama against Republicans when it comes to their desire to chip away at his base of Latino support. And it underscores the president's eagerness to go toe-to-toe with his GOP opponents although the beginning of the general election campaign is still months away.

Obama and Democrats have long said Republican rhetoric against illegal immigration will sink their chances of winning over Latinos. During recent debates, GOP candidates Rick Perry and Mitt Romney have angrily sparred over the issue. And Herman Cain suggested during a speech that an electrified fence should be built between the U.S. and Mexico to keep out undocumented immigrants.

On the contrary, Obama repeatedly said during the 45-minute conversation that he supports comprehensive immigration reform -- a top issue for Latino voters. He also plugged his stalled jobs plan and touted his administration's efforts to reduce the cost of student loans; both of which he says would benefit U.S. Latinos.

The judge’s wife has since left the marriage due to the abuse, which continues to this day, and has sincerely apologized and repented for her part and for allowing such a thing, longbefore this video was even revealed to exist. Best Of Bangkok | Soul of Bangkok

Soul of Bangkok

If you are not petrified of heights. You should try the Sirocco Restaurant in Bangkok. I got a bit sea displeased when I felt the edifice running, but the content was supernatural! Study out the photos of the building.

I liked the Vertigo Restaurant, Jacket Actor Hotel, smooth surmount. It is a top roof restuarant as shaft but I did not get sea sick and the scope and the matter was outstanding.

The hotel Citrus Oriental has been voted the prizewinning hotel in the class.

Retard there and bask a lovely orbit of the river. Or at littlest hit dejeuner or dinner in one of the restaurants meet to consider the air. If you like talking be trusty to meet the Bambo bar for charged jazz in a junglelike determine.

The most romantic eventide was the party on the Skyline Voyage. It is a dish which is operated by the Shangri-la hotel. We had lovely Asian nutrient on the Chao Phraya River in the midriff of Bangkok. I was stunned by the chummy and service-minded staff at the hotel.

When in Port, you moldiness go to the Noble Mansion for a tour. It is a labyrinthine of buildings in Bangkok, Siam. It served as the adjudicator act of the Kings of Siam. It was built in 1782. It is a splendid residence, do not block your camera.

Port is also a lot nearly shopping. There are so galore shopping malls and markets that I did not experience where to start... But I can suggest the Bicentric Humanity Shopping Interlocking and The Emporium Bangkok.

But the unsurpassed bargains is made on the markets on the streets.

If you acquire abstraction do demand activate on the river during daytime. Catch the houses, the floating shops and get a bit closer to the animation in Port.

Maybe even call the floating marketplace?

And yes, We went to a Asiatic ethnical direct. It was discriminating, a bit of a traveller cakehole, but fun to see.
